“Across the Dance Floor”

He didn’t know

how to approach

her

as she sat

at a table

with some friends

while he leaned

against a wall

alone,

he had seen

her

at the club

a couple of

times

but it only

took once

for him to

fall into what

he thought was

love,

she had walked

by him

on her way

to the bathroom

he could hear

her talking

as her and

her friend

rattled on about

some girl stuff

and boys

her voice

fitting

her body

and look

as if by

design,

she had smiled

at him

or at least

in his direction

as she and

her friend

pushed through

the crowd

back to their

table

causing him

to get even

more nervous

if that was

at all possible,

she seemed so

right for him

that chipped

tooth

of hers

that kept her

from having the

perfect smile

drew him even

deeper

into her appeal,

needing to find

a way into

her world

as he leaned

against the

graffiti on the

wall

he didn’t like

to dance

mostly due to

the fact

that he didn’t

know how

guys don’t tend

to hang out

together

and practice dance

moves,

he could only

come up

with

two viable options

that would get

him

near her

and they were

to buy her

a drink

or ask her

to dance

neither one very

promising

with him having

to be the

one

to execute them,

he looked over

at her table

trying not to

stare

but once his

eyes

locked on to

her beauty

it was so

hard

to get them

to let go

of it

he could pick

out her laugh

through all the

chaotic noise

all around him

as she turns

all her attention

towards one of

her friends

entertaining the

table

with a very

animated story,

he wanted to

go with option

number one

and buy her

a drink

but he didn’t

see her

asking him to

have a seat

at their crowded

table

even if she

did accept his

offer

and asking her

to dance

after that

just didn’t seem

to fit

so he was

going to have

to dance

and if she

said “no”

he could follow

up

with the drink

offer,

he felt a

bead of sweat

roll down his

forehead

pausing

as it hits

the bridge of

his nose

then continuing

down

the side of

his left cheek,

he was really

going to do

this

waiting for the

right song

and a small

opening

in her attention

that he might

be able to

squeeze through,

her table now

on the other

side

of the room

across the dance

floor

from the wall

he was leaning

on now

a fast paced

song

started to make

it’s way out

of the speakers

her table was

quiet

as her friends

looked around,

he stepped on

to the dance

floor

heading in her

direction

like walking in

a dream

brightly colored

lights

flashing through

the machine made

fog

slowing down the

whole world

around him,

he had to

struggle a little

when he finally

got there

to get past

some chairs

blocking her table

breaking up

his smooth entry

he stood over

her table

as she sat

before him

as he asked

her

“if she would

like to dance?”

she looked up

at him

a confused look

on her face

“what?”

was all

she said

he bent down

and asked again

“would you like

to dance?”

she didn’t say

a word

just scrunched up

her nose

and shook her

head “no”

he quickly mumbled

something

which he’s guessing

was an offer

for a drink

a little shake

of her head

“no” again

without the

scrunched

up nose

and he turned

back around

getting stuck in

those same chairs

he heard laughter

behind him

as his foot

finds the dance

floor

not knowing if

it was meant

for him

or not

but it cuts

right through his

heart

just the same,

everything around

him

is moving fast

now

as his life

drops into a

slow motion

crawl

his mind now

remembering

something a friend

said

when he told

her

about this girl

he really liked

and didn’t know

how

to approach

her

she said

“the longest walk

your ever going

to take,

is across that

dance floor

when you go

over

to ask her

to dance”

he’ll have to

remember to

correct her

next time he

sees her,

“the longest walk

he ever took,

was across the

dance floor

back to the

wall

he was leaning

on,

after she said

“no”…
