Here I stand, on a rainy day,

tired and in disarray,

floppy hood up on my head,

still dreaming dreams left by my bed.

Here I am, dark circles heavy,

can barely keep my pen held steady,

then suddenly, you appeared

and sat down.

I don’t look at you, my eyes downcast,

I don’t wonder if the silence should last,

but then I hear you loud and clear,

you lean in to make sure I hear,

and I turn to look at you.

The first thing I notice:

your eyes are round

and big and brown

and beautiful.

I won’t see you smile until later that day,

but it’s bright and kind

and beautiful.

You shielded me from the rain that day,

I was a stranger, but you didn’t care.

“Take it with you, to get home,” you say --

I still have it, it stayed right here.
