5th Street

Rollin down 5th street
Hair picked into a world around me
Like the life I was living
Showed in my stride
I would not bend down and sacrifice
I would not become my pride
But I was proud
Dark colored and loud
For my people had been silenced for too long
Bell bottoms hanging down
Dancing in a circling orbit
Around my ankles
That connected to my feet
Moving like a bird, symbolizing its freedom
Too many times had I see blood run in the streets
Too many times had I see my grandmas back break
More and more as the hope she held onto
Struggled to keep itself alive in a place so cold
We were born of Africa
Of roots sturdy and strong
Of animals that roamed with us across the desert lands
To find the translucent answer to another days breath
Water
Dancing to keep our spirits in line with the gods
To transcend this reality
Painted ourselves with mud and colors
To reflect our connection to the world around us

Yet we were captured
Broken and beaten across the sea
We were seen as cattle
Through the cold crystal eyes of pale ghosts
Seems like they rose from the dead
To rain hell upon this earth
I once knew as my haven
My mama don’t deserve to live a life like this
My family stripped of knowing their origin
I lost on the back roads where young boys hung from trees
Like ripe fruit
Where innocent girls where set ablaze by the devil dressed in white hooded gowns
These marks of history make my insides cringe
Make my bones quiver
Hope some things have changed
Yet I am unsure

Still today I walk with head high
I walk with rainbows in my hair
And funk beats steaming through the beat box
I carry on my shoulders
I will not be defeated
Instead I will carry my torch of survival
With grace and elegance
With a voice that knows its strength
And speaks up against all odds
Beauty born to the beat of Africa
Transcends all hatred
We will be remembered and we will not back down

So I complete these circles of revolutions
On the dance floor freckled in flickering lights
Unite
With anger aside
Though I fight its feeling daily
It will only drain me
So I live onward
Reflecting my radiant light
