Dust!

It was nice to be home, Marie had to admit. The two-week holiday had been nice; she wouldn’t have missed it for anything, but still she sighed in relief when she walked in through her door.

She left her luggage in the hallway and went in to the kitchen. Coffee first, anything else second.

Marie took a cup from the cupboard, brushed the dust off the kettle, the coffee jar. She should have made more of an effort in cleaning up before she left, obviously, but it was too late to think that now. What was done was done – at least the kettle still worked and that was all that mattered.

She walked over to the refrigerator, opened the door. No milk! Of course, as any that was left would have been good for nothing but the drain. She’d drink her coffee black then.

When she turned to walk back across the room she noticed her footprints, quite clearly visible in the dust that had settled on the floor. Strange. Very strange. At least she could be sure that there was no one inside the house with her.

A thick layer of it covered the counters and the kitchen table. Everything, in fact. Marie had never seen so much dust in her life. But it was nothing to worry about, was it. Just dust. And dust could not hurt anyone....could it?
