When God said “Let there be light” he was surprised to find that the Darkness had not been empty. Twisting. Roiling. Stretching out into the Abyss. Blinking furiously. Staring back with unending hatred.

Just lock it away. Hide it in the dark corners of creation. Leave no evidence that there was something here first. Something older.

If God created light, never ask “Who made the dark?”

But we are made In His image. And we contain the echo of that original fear. It is why Eve tasted the apple. It is what Cain saw in his brother’s eyes as the gleam of life faded.

It is why we get our parents to check our closets. Why we jump into our beds at night.

We know it’s there.

Waiting

Waiting for the light to go out.
