Invisible

Your silence in the midst
Of our abject suffering
Is deafening,
Constricting
My heart--
I cannot breathe

The lights go dim;
And my eyes see
Fuzzy Outlines
Of shapes
That look like love
In the distance;
That I am certain
Feel like love
But, it seems,
I will never know
For sure.

I could have used
Your voice
To speak to the darkness,
To join
With mine
Crying out against
Violence
Abuse
Oppression
Hate--

We would have made a
Cacophony
Sending
Predators
Violaters
Haters
Away

At the very least,
The noise
Would have scared them...

But, you have been
Strangely silent:
I have not heard
Your voice
Blending with mine
As I weep for
Deliverance
In the dead of night.

Your fists are not
Bloody
From pounding on the
Doors
Of heaven
Until we are safe,
Free
From tyranny.

I have been hungry in your midst,
And you did not feed me;
Thirsty, and no drink
Was offered.

It's possible you
Don't see us--
That we are invisible,
Cloaked behind
Job promotions
Beautiful homes
Shiny baubles
Achievements

But, we are here
And our pain is real,
Palpable.
It stares back at me
In the  mirror,
Haunting me,
A reflection
I hardly
Recognize
Anymore.

I so desperately
Wish
You knew,
You understood
How much, I,
We,
Need you

Please stop turning away
From our suffering
Please stop talking over
Our pain
Please stop changing
The subject to topics
That avoid
The issues of
Sexual violence
Abuse
Shame
And oppression
That delineate our very lives.

Please.
Just stop
And listen.
Open your eyes
And see:

It's me,
Your sister--
(mother, aunt, friend)--
Standing in the doorway of your heart;
Surrounded by the darkness
Tired
Weary
Thirsty
And weak--
Barely able to hold
Our heads
Up
In the midst of a battle
So fierce
It threatens
To claim our souls.

We could really use
A cup of cold water
And a place to lay
Our heads
