Do not set yourself on fire for my sake.

I know too well that although

you will burn with rage,

any kind of fire will eventually extinguish

and in the process of burning for me,

you will turn yourself into dust and ashes

left gasping for air from the very smoke

that arises from you own charred flesh.

Light a small fire somewhere in your soul.

Guard it well and love it tenderly.

If it ever gets extinguished,

I will find my way to you

like a lost sailor searching

for the silhouette

of a barren light house.

I will find you

And take comfort just knowing

that the wisp of smoke

came from a fire you set

that once loved me so greatly despite its size.

I will be content knowing

that only a part of your soul was burned

and that you still have room

to be someone else’s lighthouse,

another sailor’s love.
