The Note I Left After Talking Her Down

Forgive me, friend.

I’m writing this by

the microwave light

flashing 3 a.m. like a haunted strobe.

Your dark form curls quietly

under blankets that have finally

stopped shivering, shaking, screaming.

My friend, forgive me

for the words I couldn’t find,

the hurts I couldn’t heal,

the thin red trails I couldn’t get out of the bathroom rug--

believe me, I tried.

Forgive me, I lied

I’ve taken your knives, out of love,

the sharp ones in the block by the stove.

I promise to return them

tomorrow, or someday, when the sun comes up

and you pull back the curtains

and decide that light

is worth seeing again.

I promise, love, I will still be here then.

This is very powerful and makes one think. She's lucky to have such a good friend. You saved her life no doubt.
