No escape

I longed for the sleep of the angels,

so weary of the nightmare on T. V.

I needed a break for something good,

wanted a break from never-ending unreality,

but instead I got more bad dreams,

of hate, suspicion, low-brow, and fear.

Of just being along for the ride in reverse,

backwards, ever backwards, all the cries and tears.

Cries of the poor, cries of women,

cries of minorities, cries of those who think.

Memories of a government that helped,

gone, long gone, in a flash, a blink.

Gone like it never was, a barely-remembered time.

Welcome to the new day, the hammer of the few,

brought down on heads who dare to dissent.

Opposition beaten to submission, who knows what is true?
