The scent of cigarette smoke hangs in the air

The taste gone from my lips, though I swear, it was there.

A faded memory crosses my sight

I remember, then, with tears in my eyes.

A mere figment, it was,a concoction of my mind

A lovely thought, sewn carefully through time.

I realize, at last, that missing is something more.

Something I had forgotten, a sweet thing I knew before.

Before the hair hung white round my face, before I lost myself in this dreadful, dark place.

I blink heavy eyelids and brush away the soft tears

It slipped away so quickly, this gathering of years

One last time, I close my eyes, filled with guilt and Shame.

I swear, I knew you. I loved you. How I wish I remembered your name.
