Bounce!

The rubber room – no, not like that, this one it bounces words. Not an echo as such, but a mix-up, a mangler of oral utterance.

It’s not too bad to walk on. I’d worried that I would be sent stumbling and tumbling but the bounce to my feet is gentle. A bit of an extra spring in my step but no more than that. The door closes for my five minutes inside.

But now I’m left knowing not quite what to say. I should have spent a bit of time thinking about that earlier but it’s too late now. The seconds are passing, I must say....something. Feeling self-conscious and slightly crazy I speak pretty softly. “Hello.”

Bounce, “Ohell.”

Bounce, “Elhol.”

Bounce, “Lehol.”

And then right back to the original word, “Hello.”

I had no idea what to expect to be honest but this is kind of cool. Breaking down a word in to it’s letters, or maybe for longer ones syllables, I get an idea of what I want to say.

Help.” Bounce, “Leph”; bounce, “Pleh”, bounce, “Elph.”

Me.” Not much it can do with this so it’s bounce, “Em”; bounce, “Me”, twice over.

Understand” Bounce, “Dersuntand”; bounce, “Andstunder”; bounce, “Uddsantue”, bounce, “Standunder.”

Just random noises, that’s what words are. Sounds we put together and accept to mean certain things.

Crazy.” Bounce, “Zycra”; bounce, “Azcry”; bounce, “Cyraz”; bounce, “Razyc.”

World.” Bounce, “Drowl”; bounce, “Lwdro;” bounce, “Oldwr”; bounce, “Lrowd.”

I can honestly say I don’t have to learn the pronunciation of some of these words this rubber room is producing as it tosses the sounds from wall to wall.

Absolute.” Bounce, “Solbutea”; bounce, “Tulbeaso”; bounce, “Aleobsut”, bounce, “Stabolue.”

Lunacy.” Bounce, “Lanucy”; bounce, “Clyuna;” bounce, “Nyclua”, bounce, “Ulancy.”

The door opens and I walk out with a spring in my step that gives no hint to my mental confusion. Has it helped my understanding? Well, as far as the theory of words and the sounds that go to make up words go, I’d say yes. But please, no one say a word for it will now be bouncing around inside my head making not the slightest bit of sense at all.
