I remember

One night

My brother woke me up

To see

Our streetlamp light the springtime snow fall

Gentle

Snow falling

Again

After months of falling

It falls

Hints of brown springtime smothered and drowned

By snow

And I said

To him

‘We were so close to spring’

And then

‘Why did God have to send snow again’

Wounded

His face changed

Slightly

From quiet to clouded

At me

And then again from clouded to clear

He turned

And he looked

Outside

At our street lamp glow

Warm cold

‘God’s showing us His beautiful snow’

I heard

I looked too

Closer

At the soft falling snow

White night

Our gravel driveway fading from us

Quietly

And the trees

Stretched out

Further it seemed to me

A child

To catch upon their branches the soft

Beauty

I saw it

The pure

Simple drifting peace of

Light snow

I saw what my brother was saying

Of God

We sat there

Silent

Looking through our window

Up high

Watched the snow begin to collect on

Our roof

And now I

Have grown

From a small child to

Bigger

I remember that night with every

Spring snow

I can’t help

But see

The beauty in the cold

I hate

Thanks fills my heart even as I wish

For spring
