something keeps me distant
like I'm just beyond or behind the moment
a broken metronome

a wedge driving itself into time
the wings of a crow cutting through wind

I've been a weed
in the garden
and a stump that refuses
to split

I can feel it in your eyes
when your ordinary words
float past my ears
like a rock in water

memories like these pile up
at my feet like potato skins
like the husks of corn
all of them taste
of sorrow
and separation

I've clawed my way in
and stumbled my way out
of nearly everything I've ever done

nothing about that changes
some have it
some don't

something keeps me distant
and most of these words
reaching onto the clean page
are me trying to get closer

to what
I have yet to learn
