Johnny was a football star

everyone in town, knew that he'd go far

What nobody seemed to know

is what he went through everytime that he went home

Bille Jean, she had a dream

that one day her and Johnny might break free

but some things just don't work out

life ain't always fair, Billie had no doubt

That's the way that it goes sometimes,

that's the way it has to be

We can sit here and just hide our eyes

it ain't happening, if we don't see

Johnny's old man was a drunk

left those scars on Johnny's back, just for fun

and everyone just looked away

"nothing I can do", is what they'd always say

but Billie Jean was always there

she's the only one, who always seemed to care

but no matter how she tried

she couldn't take away the pain he felt inside

That's the way that it goes sometimes

that's the way it has to be

We can sit here and just hide our eyes

it ain't happening, if we don't see

Johnny walked through that front door

pulled the trigger, laid his old man on the floor

and when the cops took him away

they just shook their heads, didn't know what to say

That's the way that it goes sometimes

that's the way it has to be

We can sit here and just hide our eyes

it ain't happening, if we don't see
