Why Won’t You?”

Why won’t you try to fly?” he said,

and pointed up towards the sky.

Why did he have to go and ask,

for I can’t explain just why.

The birds make it look easy

as they stretch wide their wings,

but that’s where they belong;

they are sky-dwelling things.

Balloons would scare me – all that gas

I’d cause a big explosion;

and even on an air-liner

I’d cause a big commotion.

Climb!” he said. “Reach the top!”

My feet would trip me down,

and in a mangled tangle

I would fall back in to town.

My left hand keeps me grounded,”

I try to then explain,

but he’ll think I’m talking nonsense,

that cowardice is my game.

My confidence is way too low

to ever let me fly;

I’m stuck on terra firma

until the day I die.
