Theodore Bucket was under the impression that his mother was very much afraid of dead things. She screamed and had a fuss when a dead mouse was recovered from under the couch when they were moving their furniture from the old house to the new house, was set on killing a roach but squeamish at the prospect of throwing it out, and she'd shed a tear at roadkill badgered and toasting on the steaming pavement.

But there was much to admire about the New Place. Theo enjoyed the little chickens in their coop, and the other wildlife in their small home on the fringe of the society.  What he didn't like was his father's old dog, Dory, who was fond of growling and scratching the young boy. The dog had surly gotten aggressive after having her pups, and Dad was sure the dog should be put down, but Mom had called for mercy, so they'd kept her in their move.

The suburbs they'd moved from had been bulldozed and built up into Deer's Crossing- the irony of the human homes destroying the homes of animals was lost on the inhabitants.

But inhabitants no longer they would be.  The neighbors had been unfriendly, nosy, and after some heinous accusations from a few, and threats of calling the police, the undone mother decided it was time to up and move.

The New Place was a fixer upper, and Theo spent most of his days chasing rabbits, climbing through meadows with prickling stickerhurrs,  scuttling up trees, and feeding the  chicks into chickens. His dad was well preoccupied with fixing the house with another group of men, and whenever the boy tried finding some time with him, he was told to 'Get you ass out of here and leave me alone.'

So he contented to spending time with his mom, the chickens and wildlife. There was also a small river that trailed through their property, and he couldn't help but be found leaping between the stones back and forth between the banks.

When the day of death came for one of the hens, Theo watched with a cold eye as one of his wards- Penny- was swiped up by the firm hand of his father, the neck rung  into submission and the head chopped off in  swift succession. While his mother had bawled at the bird's squawks, he had only kept his eye on the axe. He's seen his dad use it a couple times, chopping branches, or removing stumps but never anything like this. He follows its placement back in the tool shed.

That night, as the dog is sleeping out on the porch under the stars, the axe gleams like the moon in the hands of the boy. He bags the corpse in a  chicken feed bag, knowing his mother wouldn't approve of the dead thing, and scuttles off into the night towards the river.

The river is calm, a dark vein that glistens in the night. As he gets closer, he hears the faintest crack of a tree branch and looks across the water. There, a girl, stares at him with a yowling bag in her hands, tied to a stone.

Theo smiles in fondness. He remembered the cats. And the puppies he'd drowned. But he was fond of the axe now.

'What's your name?' He asks, hesitates to dump the sack, maybe she was scared of dead things like his mom.

'Billie.' The girl smiles back,

'My name's Theo.'

'Hi Theo,' Her smile widens to a grin, dumping the chicken feed sack into the water. It sinks on the stone.  'What did you get?'

'A mad dog,'

'I did a raccoon! It was digging through our trash, bothering us,' She says with a puff of pride. 'Now it won't no more, but my sister still does.'

Theo scrunches his face. He liked being an only child, maybe she would too.

Day Six Prompt: You're a killer dumping your latest victim into the river. Just as you're about to be done, you spot another person. Doing exactly the same thing. And they've just spotted you.
