Jump!

The best one of them all and it has to hang there, taunting me. If I was just that tiny bit taller I could reach it.

Up on my toes I go. I’m almost balancing here on my claws now. Why couldn’t I have had bigger feet like my brother Sidney? I’d have been able to.....

Whoa, that was close. I nearly toppled right over then.

And still it’s there, just hanging around. I don’t have much time before someone else turns up and steals that acorn right out from above my nose. I’m not going to lose it. I mean, look at it; it’s perfect!

There’s only one thing I can try now. Not that I haven’t tried jumping earlier, but this one is going to have to be special. Knee-bends to limber up. Arm stretches, then standing on one foot, then the other – have to get my balance right.

I look up, focus on that taunting acorn. Every nerve fibre in my body needs to be tuned in to that spot. I bend my knees, wiggle my body, and I leap!

Too high! I’ve flown above it. Darn, darn and double darn!

It doesn’t matter, though. I reach out my arms and grab it on the way down. Yes! I’ve done it!

No time to lose. I must secret away my prize because already I can hear approaching chattering. A hop, a skip, a celebratory jump and I’m back off towards my drey.
