Trickery

I came upon this leprechaun

while going for a walk.

He did not try to run away

but beckoned me to talk.

Perhaps I should have known

that he was really up to tricks,

but things, they can get boring

when living in the sticks.

The leprechaun held out his hand,

a deck of playing cards;

Go ahead and take your pick.”

Well, that is not so hard.

The first one to pick out an ace

will win this scrumptious pie.”

I’d not seen it there before

yet didn’t wonder why.

I’d thought there’d be a better prize,

perhaps a pot of gold,

but I would never mention it

for I am not so bold.

And then I went and picked it;

my card, it showed an ace.

Would it have made things better

if I’d not waved it in his face?

You win,” he said and gestured

to the dessert on show

and then he jumped up on his feet,

started then to go.

Would you not like to have a slice?”

He declined with a sigh,

then vanished, left me to it --

what proved to be mud pie!

So if you meet a leprechaun

don’t let him play his trick

because if you go and win like me

you’ll end up feeling sick!
