Once upon a time, long before you and I were ever born, and even so long before sheep knew to run from wolves, everything belonged to the earth, and the earth belonged to everything.

A man loved a woman very much. He could give her nothing, as he owned nothing, so he gave her his words of love and himself. But eventually, his words became so trite, and the woman sighed. She loved him as well, but she was not content in his affections.

While the woman never voiced her discontent, the man was set on proving himself and their love to one another. So he trekked a long way through the garden, searching for a bloom to express his love for the woman.

Finally, he comes to the Tree Everlasting. A harmless rosebush without thorns. It has the most beautiful and fragrent blushing flowers. The scent a tickle to the nose, the bloom a gem to the eye.

He knows that this is the one, yet his conscious gives him pause. He knows the rose is not his to take, yet he so desperately wants it- he needs it, even though everyone wants it and needs it, his love for his own proved more important.

He reaches out, hesitates, but knows no hesitation in love for the woman, and so plucks the rose from the tree. The Tree Everlasting instantly curdles at his offense, the branches thin, cluster, thorns sprout over the entirety of the bush, even the stem of the rose the man holds pricks his hand with a sore pain, drops of blood. He is startled by the injury, dropping the rose, which withers into a scab.

And this is how hurt and death were introduced to the world.
