Scan Or Savour

Are you one of those people that can pick up a book and devour it in a night? Reading fast, picking out the important words to concentrate on and just scanning the rest? Or do you like to take your time, reading and processing every single word right down to the last ‘and’? Reading the lines slowly and savouring the experience?

Me, I ‘savour’, take my time. If I don’t like something I won’t read it, full stop. But if I do, what is the point in rushing it. I never used to be a slow reader but I am now. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been reading the ‘Stormbreaker’ series, written by Kenneth Oppel for 9-12 year olds. Even so I’m taking about a week to read each one.

In my defence, I rarely spend more than an hour a day reading printed or ebooks, as most of my other spare time is spent writing or reading on Booksie. The only problem is that I also have been collecting both kinds of books for years and have gathered a massive library, and still get tempted by new titles.

Of course, I could scan them, get through them three or four times as fast, but where’s the fun in that. I’m going to carry on taking my time and savouring the words and making reading a pleasurable experience.
