Inspiration

Inspiration is a horseman;
A Revere cloaked all in black
Whispering once his news important
Then not ever coming back;
Choosing night to ride his races
To the artists who await,
Peeking in at all the faces
Of the people who create
And their patient hesitation
As they wait with hope and dread
For the horseman, Inspiration,
When they ought to be in bed.

To the painters he comes early:
In the morning, after rest,
For he knows that daytime, surely,
Is when painters do their best.
For the bakers and the kitchen men,
He never leaves their side,
But continues his advice to them
Until, at night, he rides.

But the writers are variety
With which he likes to play:
Sometimes up-tip-toeing quietly
And pouncing in the day,
But his favorite time to catch them
Is when lights are nearly out
When they’ve just had time to stretch themselves
And think of turning out—
Then he’ll gallop by and whisper
Inspiration in their ears;
Watch them leaping for their papers
While he rides and laughs till tears.
Inspiration is a horseman
With no care for what is right,
So the writers are nocturnal.
Inspiration rides at night.
