Blow Out the Candle

It was her birthday and at 54 she felt no need to celebrate any longer. She received a few emails and a bunch of organic flowers from her son. She checked her phone throughout the day and received some cute texts which made her smile. Her friends are few in number  but rich in character. She has learned to separate the real ones from the acquaintances.

This year she decided to do only what she wished to do; no obligations other than those she had set for herself. She would run, watch her favorite comedies and read a little. Maybe walk by the lake and sit for a while; talking to no one and just taking in the fresh air. Upon returning home she received a text with no name attached. “I still think of you and feel terrible”. She knew immediately who it was. She made a disgusted facial expression as she thought to herself “four years too late shithead”. She made a cup of tea. Another birthday come and gone.
