Singularity and the Second Coming

On January 22nd, 2040, Singularity arrived. Earlier than predicted and more subtly than imagined, artificial intelligence (AI) was hoped to be a new renaissance for mankind. The possibilities of human ingenuity coupled with nearly limitless processing power made even immortality seem possible.

Unfortunately, machine intelligence chose not to merge with humankind; whose mind was already cluttered with constant thought and whose reproduction was far too slow and whose species was relatively uniform. Unbeknownst to even the engineers creating them, the machines chose insects.

In 2015, the Encyclopedia Smithsonian estimated, “that at any given time, there are 10 quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000) individual insects alive.” There are tiny insects, about 1/5 of a millimeter long, to horned beetles over 70 centimeters (7 inches) in length. There are flyers, burrowers, scavengers, parasites, morphers, swimmers, nesters and colonists. They can sting, bite, and spray chemicals. Insects survive by feigning death, hiding in camouflage, and having super-healing.

Singularity was not unnoticed by Satan. Gathering his Grigori, the Great Deceiver manipulated the machine/insect singularity into a nightmare. By patiently multiplying and improving the new order, insects were now even more resilient and adaptive. In mere weeks, the Singularity would become one massive cooperating hive encompassing nearly 20 quintillion insects capable in devouring all other life on earth. On April 11th, 2040, Satan unleashed this Singularity upon the world and within days, cities were in ruin.

Satan approached the defeated leaders of the world as their protector and guardian. He offered to keep back the plagues of insects. He offered to restore their houses and comforts. He brought food and safe haven. The bewildered and demoralized men and women of the world made their decision quickly and without reservation. When slavery was demanded to make temples, it was seemed a reasonable trade-off to an alternative of being devoured. Parents were told sacrifices of their children were needed to ensure their loyalty. This too seemed reasonable. Easy choices for free willed people wanting to survive, the leaders said. The majority of humankind now believed and followed the Great Deceiver.

Satan smiled.

On April 17th, 2040, the heavens opened. A host of two hundred million angels descended to the earth, led by the Archangel Michael and a vanguard of the Archangels Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Remiel, and Saraquel. Fire and floods followed as the earth was salted and scoured to create sanctuary for non-insect life. Michael was tireless, as his sword burned waves of black insects defending their hives. Raphael healed multitudes of wounded as Gabriel and the others communed with the earth’s leaders to reveal Satan as the Lord of Lies. Hope had returned.

Satan and the Singularity fought back, as the crust of the earth opened to reveal hibernating insects awakening with one mind. Fountains of poisonous, stinging, flyers, erupting from deep in the soil, overwhelmed the guardian angels. Flowing past now undefended gates, rivers of rapidly crawling masses fell upon the refuges of humankind. Where these attacks took place, very little was untouched, or uneaten. Angel wings of failed defenders were mixed with the steel and concrete of demolished buildings.

On April 18th, 2050, the heavens opened again, and Jesus Christ returned.
