“Blue Sky”

He stood on

the edge of

a lie

trying to peer

over

the chasm

between him

and the truth

but the clouds

of deception

were blocking

his view,

he picked up

a rock

and threw it

towards the

other side

able to hear

the faint ring

of truth

when it hit

telling him

he was close

to the truth

but still unable

to see it,

he looked into

her eyes

as she spoke

to him

always amazed

at the sheer

brilliance

of the colors

residing there,

she never even

blinks

as he feels

that chasm

between him

and the truth

begin to widen

the slight twinge

of a smile

tugging at her

lips

as the ledge

of trust

he’s standing on

narrows

not knowing now

what direction

to look in

to be facing

towards

the truth,

he sends up

a flare

in the form

of a question

something

she can easily

answer

and shine some

light down

on to the

truth

through the clouds

of deceit

that she has

seeded

but she ignores

his signal

doesn’t look up

lowers her eyes

instead

and begins to

play with her

hair

the sun shining

through it

giving its light

auburn color

the look of

summer blond,

his footing

starts to slip

with each strand

of hair

she twists

around her finger

not wanting to

lose his balance

and fall

afraid

if he does

he’ll lose sight

of her

forever,

he continues to

listen to her

as his eyes

try and concentrate

on the rainbow

of greens

that are always

mixing

in her eyes

before being

drawn away

by the movement

of her hand

and then

to her finger

as she keeps

pulling her hair

tighter

and tighter

around it

the tip now

starting to turn

red,

he could feel

his narrow ledge

starting to be

chipped away

as she lets the

hair

around her finger

unravel

continuing to talk

but her words

drift past him

no longer listening

to the content

she puts in

them

his attention

centered

on that newly

released

strand of hair,

hanging now

in a loose

curl

and sticking out

from all the

conforming

straight strands

of hair

that are neatly

lying in place

till she shakes

her head

at the punch

line

of her own

joke,

then running

her hand

through her

hair

out of habit

effectively

killing the curl

as her fingers

feather out

her hair

sending that

rouge strand

back to it’s

original place,

he could feel

their joint worlds

pulling apart

being separated

by that wedge

of truth

that he just

can’t seem to

push aside,

the blue sky

that hung above

them

for so long

is starting to

fall

and no matter

how much he

still loved her

he knew

it wasn’t going

to be enough,

his eyes remain

transfixed

by all the

subtle movements

of her body

fascinated by

the familiarity

they had to

him

yet each one

with an underlying

uniqueness

that made it

all her own,

he takes no

notice

of her pause

in conversation

and the dead

air

that accompanied

it,

it was her

turn now

as she picks

up

on all his

non-gestures

his total lack

of animation

that he normally

has

when he is

engaged in

conversation

with her

or anyone

else

that he likes,

“not feeling well?”

she says

with a clinical

look

in her eye

he shrugs

“maybe I am,

a little under

the weather”

then gives her

his best

upset stomach

smile

which gives her

enough reassurance

that everything

is good

between them

not caring to

look any deeper

she continues on

with her story

blind to the

blue sky

that is falling

all around her,

the decision

having been

made

he allows himself

to linger

as he

takes in

as much of

her

as possible

letting his last

look

stop at her

eyes

carefully watching

the various shades

of green

mixing together

as she speaks

before turning

and silently

walking away

side stepping

the big chunks

of blue

that are crashing

down

in front of

him…
