The Communicator

As I begin my morning I have a ritual of making lists, drinking my coffee and typing emails. Writing is my preferred mode of communication; it can be edited and refined unlike face to face encounters. I can become very anxious within most conversational exchanges. The pace and sarcastic undertones that many use can be very disarming to me. When I write I can control the content and pace. I do not need to receive the tones and nuances of the face to face interactions which can cause stress.

It is ironic that my chosen vocation is a communication specialist. For three decades, I have tried to assist special needs students with using their voices. The punch line in the situation; is the degree to which I dislike talking. Writing is what I prefer to do. Fortunately, the role of a therapist requires minimal expression. Less speaking equates to the creation of an open space for clients to express themselves. People tell me that I am a good listener. The truth of the matter is; I am a terrible speaker. I just compensate with being a keen observer.
