Lost and Found

In search of orange sunsets

And distant purple dreams,

I wandered through my wilderness,

And drank from poisoned streams.

As in a haze I sauntered,

A crooked, drunken trail –

I found that truth eluded me

And set me up to fail.

My heart became a stranger,

My mind, it knew me not.

And as for orange sunsets,

That quest I soon forgot.

Still, the path enchanted me

And swallowed up my years,

As foolishly I turned my heart

From tiny, growing fears.

I became a ghost to me,

A shadow of myself,

And then I spied that dusty dream

Abandoned on a shelf.

Very slowly, I reached up

And touched its purple spine.

A thrill ran through my very soul

And I knew it was mine.

Overjoyed, I wept and laughed!

My sunsets and my dreams

Were right where I had left them

Beside the poisoned streams.
