They give you a choice, but they won't let you choose
And you have to remember to only speak when spoken to.

And remind yourself, you’re
Only beat when you break the rules.
They justify their violence-

Say children need discipline.
They break you down,
Criticize each word that leaves your mouth.
You drowning in silence and repression-
Even then you worry you’re being too loud.
You don't want your suffering to annoy them.
Steady your breathing and hide,
But whatever you do,

Never cry.
You toss and turn
And dream one of two things:

Nothing

Or freedom,
But dreams are only dreams
And they say they mean nothing.
In delirious thoughts
You reason:

There’s nothing wrong with breathing

And it’s free.

So you breath
And breath.

Then you wiggle your toes under the blanket
And you suppress a giggle-
Just the thought of them not knowing

That you’re breathing easy.
It brings you so much joy.
You start to get some sleep-
Just a little,

When all a sudden you hear a sharp whisper in your ear…

“No… toe... wiggling!”

Your eyes open wide in fear:
It’s the headmistress in the dark by your bed.
With that scowl on her face that you dread.

You don't know what to think.
Is it just another nightmare?

Is she real or just another ghost?

You never know
There's not much of a distinction anymore.
