The Words I Cannot Say

Your arms were a cold November retreat

So warm and safe

I almost let the truth slip in your front seat

I chickened out and admitted defeat

I hope it’s true what they say

About how pussy cats

Always land on their feet

Because last night I felt the courage

And when I opened my mouth

My words all became burdened

And I silenced it all because I felt I hadn’t yet earned it

But when you touched me my heart started stirring

And the tendons

Oh these heartstrings

That hollow ache eased

After all the sting

Last night I loved you with every hidden heartbeat

And it beat for you

Yeah, it beat for you

Last night

I loved you with every heartbeat

And I swear these words to be true

I’ll land on my feet

Once I’m done falling for you

Every day I wake before dawn

And in the black of the night before day has begun

I smile and it is true

I count my heartbeats all sunrise through

Yes it beats for you

And this ones for you

And this ones for you

Yeah this ones for you

Your lips taste like pumpkin October

I know mine are nicotine and booze

And you’re sober

Is that why when morning comes

What we had last night is over

I could drink all night long

But still your kiss the hardest hangover

I hope that you know I still want you sober

And it beat for you

Yeah, it beat for you

Last night

I loved you with every heartbeat

And I swear these words to be true

I’ll land on my feet

Once I’m done falling for you

I hope that one day

Yours will beat for me too
