LOOK UP!

Look up!” she said,

into the night sky.

Tonight there’s going to be

a meteor shower.”

So dutifully when the sun set

I went outside and

turned my eyes skyward.

Nothing!

Not a single glimmer!

Even the moon,

my friends the stars,

had taken a back seat to hide

behind a shroud of cloud.

My promise of shooting stars

whisking their way

across the skyscape

came to nothing more than a

big deep blackness.

Come daybreak though,

the clouds have moved on,

moved out,

and there in the sky is a

vapour trail

left by an aircraft heading west.

A pinky redness in the sky

but there, right beside it,

not one, but two much smaller

red streaks, west bound too.

Now it could be that

they were nothing more than

other aircraft, smaller ones,

but no.

I say that they were shooting stars!

I made my wish upon one of them

and hoped that somehow

it and its companion

would make

their way

to you.
