The Todd McLellan era is over in Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers has fired McLellan as head coach and hired Ken Hitchcock to replace him.

"I think the timing is right (firing McLellan)," said Oiler's general manager, Peter Chiarelli.

The Oilers firing their coach is probably no surprise to hockey insiders.

The Oilers are 9-10-1 overall and have lost six of their last seven games in regulation.

Edmonton also lost two consecutive games this past weekend.

McLellan was in his fourth season as head coach of the Oilers when he was fired.

Hitchcock has a good head coaching resume in the NHL.

Hitchcock has coached the Dallas Stars twice.  He has coached the Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and the St. Louis Blues.
