Win after win after win. Nothing felt better than the undefeated record of the Seaport High School boys soccer team over the first course of the season. Led by their captain, Jeremy, the team put up the most goals in the district as well as prevented the most amount of goals to set the records overall. There was a reason that the team was the number one in the state, they were outstanding. No team could stop the speed and skills of the offensive line, easily moving the ball between defenders like it was nothing. No offense could pass the ball past the intimidating and powerful defensive line, let alone even score on the team. The coach of their team has trained young men into the best of the best, with many moving on to division 1 schools across the nation. Coach Ross knew what it took to be an athlete, he worked the players hard to get the results that everyone wanted and was extremely happy with. The team had great respect for their coach. There was no excuse why the team should not win out and continue through districts to states to win. No one could have expected the major heartbreak that would rock their season.
One foggy night following a thunderstorm hit the county, the coach was heading home from team workouts on his motorcycle. The front wheel caught a slippery spot in the road causing the wheel to turn, making Coach Ross lose control as he was thrown from the bike. A nearby driver saw the accident and hurried to call the ambulance, but it was too late.
Loss after loss after loss. The following weeks were the hardest the players have ever had in their lives, and each game resulted in a defeat. The accident constantly haunted the minds of the players on and off the field. Missing practice and school began to be a regular affair for some players because it was too much to handle. Jeremy’s undefeated season and hopes of being the state champs were starting to look unrealistic. The team needed a change, so they had a meeting. Their coach never took credit for his actions, he was a very humble person. Jeremy knew that his coach would want the team to move on and remember what his team accomplished before his death. At the team meeting, Jeremy approached the players with words that his coach would have said if he were still with them. "This season has by far been the most difficult for us. Losing our coach has been the hardest loss of them all, but he would have wanted us to be different. He would have wanted us to play our hearts out on the field like he has taught us to do for so many years. He never let us down so we should return the favor. I'm not saying it will be a piece of cake, but our coach deserves to have a winning season. We should prove to him that even though he isnt here, his lessons will stay in our hearts forever. We need to go out there and fight as hard as we can, for our coach." The team agreed that it was time for a change, to start winning for the coach they respected and honored so much.
The next game the team came out and scored more goals than any other game before. The undefeated record was gone, but the team could still do their best for their coach. They knew there was a lot of bumps in the road ahead, but their coach deserved to be honored. The remaining part of the season was successful for the players. They held their heads high and played the way they were trained for so long. District champs and State champs was the much needed end to their difficult season, and the player knew their coach was happy.
