Barely Visible

It had been sitting there all the time, hadn’t it? On the table, beside your right hand, ready to be picked up at any moment. It took a few of those verbal jabs for the outlines even to make themselves seen, and then it seemed no more than a spectral dagger, nothing solid.

Clearly it was there for a purpose, not as a decorative touch. Over the years your fingers reached towards it, your hand rested against it. You were becoming less and less reluctant to pick up that jagged blade of words; make stabs, cuts, drawing forth emotional blood that would seep and drip invisibly into the wood of our family table.

Growing stronger, clearer, it was no longer hidden, was it? You did not even try to conceal that weapon of your words. Your hand would rest on the hilt of the dagger, always ready to pick it up and use it. It had become enjoyable, stabbing and watching my eyes water, my emotions bleed.

It was bound to happen, that final moment when you fixated on the jugular, sliced deeply. I could see your intent in your eyes before the piercing pain took hold and you watched me bleed out. Exsanguination of the emotions; whether you intended it or not, that was your achievement. For now, though alive and apparently well, I am totally emotionally dead inside.
