“Like a Fly”

At times

she felt like

a fly

her light frame

easily pushed aside

whether it be

by an accidental

bump

or as a sinister

thrust,

weighing in at

only double digits

fully clothed

including when she

wears her heavy

boots

she was use

to bracing herself

against possible

collisions

when walking in

crowds,

not to say

she got lost

in them

her small band

of true friends

could usually spot

her

she had a

natural sparkle

that always stood

out

in the bland

parade of people

walking past her

as they all

worked so hard

to look

and act

the same,

marching together

through another

stagnant day

as she continues

to color

outside the lines

not really caring

if she blends

in or not

knowing you can

see

more of the

world

looking at it

from outside the

circle

then from within

never feeling the

need to be

accepted

just so she

can wear a

club patch

on the sleeve

of her jacket,

she doesn’t present

a formidable figure

when taking a

stand

in someone’s defense

but that won’t

slow her down

a bit

from stepping up

front

to help out

a friend,

she has a

way

of both smiling

herself

in

and out

of trouble

an impish grin

on her face

leaving you wondering

if it is for

something she has

just done

or she is

about to do

a surge of

mischief

your torn about

missing

but not so

sure

you want to

be there

if it all comes

crashing down,

and every now

and then

you’ll catch her

staring off into

the sun

forgetting to reply

to what you

just said

as she’s tying

up a thought

the beginnings

of a new story,

still not hearing

your voice

as your words

trail off

and the conversation

dies

as she makes

some very elaborate

mental notes,

taverns and ships

unlikely heroes

and gold

all coming to

life

on some distant

uncharted shore

as she steps

over the body

of a fallen

comrade,

finding her way

back to the

conversation

answering the question

you asked her

minutes ago

completely unaware

of her pause

in real life

a skip of

time

her friends are

use to

a minor offense

in the scheme

of things

rarely even brought

to her attention

anymore,

the sidewalk starts

to narrow

as the two

girls

make their way

along the street

she lowers her

left shoulder

dropping into the

heavy pedestrian

wave

coming towards her

a blur of

color

shooting out a

rip curl

of grey suits,

the sidewalk widens

as the girls

are thrown back

together

walking

side by side

in the tide

of people,

they both start

laughing

as they turn

around

at the exact

same time

looking behind

themselves

trying to see

if they caught

the attention

of the same

hot guy…
