What started with a time of solitude and peacefulness turned into arguing and reckless actions. When his wife's alarm rung, he reached out to her but she lifted herself from the bed. After returning from the bathroom she didn’t bother to say good morning. She just left the darkness of the bedroom and went into the living room.

Chris was grateful for the silence in the apartment once his wife had left earlier that morning. When they arrived back home in the late hours of the night Chris tossed and turned as he thought over their “vacation." He poured himself a glass of orange juice and ate some scrambled eggs as he stared at his computer screen. He was due to return back to work in a few days. A notification popped up in the corner of his screen. He opened up his email and it read,

“Chris, I want to apologize again. It wasn’t right for me to come into your home. I’m assuming you will want to fire me and that’s completely understandable. I’ll drop by the office next week to pick up my things. Once again I apologize.
Jane Achorn.”

Chris felt bad for Jane as he knew she’d been through some difficult things lately. He didn’t have the heart to fire her. He knew he should tell Sarah what happened. He knew he would have to tell Sarah the truth. Chris counseled people for years on ways a person could help improve their marriage. But he was refusing to do the same for his.

Finding his phone he texted his wife to meet him at the local Italian restaurant for lunch in a few hours.

The brisk harsh wind seemed to slap Chris across the face as he raced down the sidewalk. He rounded the corner to the restaurant and saw his wife across the other side of the street. She didn’t notice him but he smiled at her anyway. He watched as she swayed from one side to the other to keep herself warm. Chris then turned away after a few moments and headed into the restaurant.

He finally had a table for him and Sarah, so he ordered an appetizer and a woman’s voice called out to him, “Chris…”

He turned around and saw Jane as she walked up to him and said, “I was wondering if you got my email?”

“I did, but umm…why are you here…this isn’t the time-”

“Sorry, I’m late. I was right across the street, but I saw something in a store and…”

Chris watched his wife frown as she said to Jane “Hi…do I know you?”

“No, I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Jane I work with your husband. It’s nice to-”

“You’re the one in the picture.”

“What picture?”

“This…” Chris held his breath as his wife took out the picture of Jane leaning on Chris at the office party.
