“Last Seat”

He wasn’t sure

what he liked

about her

her looks weren’t

what some would

call striking

and maybe it

was for that

very reason

that he found

her

to be so

totally Hot,

she didn’t

throw out smiles

like all the

other girls did

hoping that just

one

would stick

and bring a

little attention

their way

she couldn’t care

less

if you noticed

her,

she always sat

in the last

seat

on the left

side

in the back

of the bus

with her feet

pushed up against

the seat in

front of her

as she rode

the 815 bus

every morning,

he had only

been riding this

bus

for a month

now

but he had

noticed her

the very first

time

he got on

and looked towards

the back

for a seat

she had her

air buds in

place

and he was

guessing

it was the

strong beat

of the music

that gave her

face

that fierce

determined look

that she wore

five days a

week

her eyes hidden

away

behind a different

pair of sunglasses

everyday

about the only

thing that changed

in her outward

appearance,

she was always

on the bus

before him

and still seated

with her feet

pressed up against

the seat in

front of her

when he got

off

because of her

self-imposed

seating chart

he was never

able to get

a seat behind

her

the best he

could do was

to get a seat

directly across

from her

which wasn’t very

often

most of the

time

he was stuck

sitting

somewhere in

the middle of

the bus

having to steal

glances of her

as he walked

to his seat

then when leaving

his seat

he would stand

in the aisle

one stop before

his came up

so he could

look in her

direction

never once

though

did he catch

her

looking back

at him,

he wasn’t painfully

shy

he had tried

to start a

conversation

with her

a couple of

times

asking about her

music

what bands

she was listening

to

as had countless

others

who saw her

sitting alone

and were intrigued

by her style

but after a

handful of

one word replies

he and the

others

could see she

didn’t want to

be disturbed

and he respected

that

as did most

of the other

people

who tried to

interact with

her

but every so

often

she came across

someone who just

wouldn’t leave her

alone

just last week

she had a

guy

that took the

seat

next to her

who kept touching

her arm

and her leg

as he tried

talking to her

taking her to

a point

where she hollered

out

“Find Another Seat!”

and when he

paused

she demanded

“NOW!”

he started to

tell her

he could sit

anywhere he liked

but a fast

acting guy

in his twenties

came charging down

the aisle

from the front

of the bus

and an older

guy

two rows in

front of her

popped out of

his seat

both men

forcibly

convinced him

that the next

stop

was the one

that he needed

to take

after which

both men quietly

returned

to their seats

getting a quick

round of applause

from the other

patrons

on the bus

and as it

died down

she stood up

and said

“Thank You,

Thank You both”

then retook her

seat

and went back

to her usual

postion

with her feet

pressed against

the back of

the seat

in front of

her

listening to her

music

with that familiar

stare

out her window

and that fierce

determined

look

on her face,

he was surprised

at the quick

response

she had gotten

from the two

men

on that day

last week

maybe just friends

he didn’t know

she had

after all

he was new

to this bus

route,

today he had

got stuck

riding in the

front of the

bus

three seats behind

the driver

he was looking

forward

when he caught

her

movement

in the driver’s

panel size

rearview mirror

she rose up

out of her

seat

long before his

stop

and started slowly

working her way

up the aisle

her form was

distorted

in the large

mirror

but it was

definitely

her body

he was watching

he turned around

in his seat

his eyes at

first

just taking in

her unprotected

look

this was the

first time he

ever saw her

whole body at

once

no four foot

wall of bus

seat

blocking his view

an image

right now of

her softly smiling

as she bends

forward

to talk to a

lady

a view that

only reinforces

his belief

that she’s totally

Hot,

she straightens up

and starts to

make her way

towards the front

of the bus

he spins around

in his seat

afraid he had

got caught staring

at her

going back to

taking peeks

of her

blurry form

in the big

rearview mirror

when he noticed

she had paused

he was about

to turn back

around

when he felt

a hand on

his shoulder

she stood over

him

looking down

her sunglasses

always in place

she hands him

a folded piece

of paper

and then says

to him

“here’s a list

of some

of the bands

I listen to,

that I thought

you might like

based on what

little I know

about you”

he looks up

at her

he takes

the slip of

paper

as the bus

pulls over and

stops,

he barely gets

a “thank you”

in

before she is

besides the driver

her left hand

on the bus

driver’s right

shoulder

she says a

few words to

him

the driver’s smile

clearly visible in

the large mirror

she keeps her

left hand on

the driver’s shoulder

as he opens

the vertical bus

doors

then she pulls

something out of

her backpack

and with a

flick of her

wrist

it turns into

a long walking

stick,

she makes her

way down the

stairs

the driver waits

as a few more

people get on

to the bus

and it wasn’t

in till the

bus pulled away

and he looked

out the window

and saw her

navigating

her way through

the crowded sidewalk

that he realized

that she was

blind,

he couldn’t

understand

how he hadn’t

noticed that

before

was he so

wrapped up

in her outer

beauty

that was all

he could see

or was it

because of

the ease

and fluidity

in her movements

that that thought

never came into

his mind,

he thought for

a minute

about this new

revelation

and wondered if

that was why

she kept to

herself

or was she

just a private

person

a question

he was going

to ask her

if he can

get her to

go out with

him,

but first

a little research

to help improve

his odds

at getting her

to say yes

to a date

after all

she did say

what little she

knew about him

so she had

thought about

him

at least once,

he pulls out

his phone

and in less

than a minute

he’s bobbing

his head

when a fierce

and determined

look

takes over his

face

as the first

of the bands

she recommended

to him

begins to play…
