I said no, but you were persistent,

I wonder if you heard me.

You see,

That night still haunts me every day,

It stalks me down the street, up every shopping aisle,

And distorts the faces of those I meet.

But more than that, it follows me home.

I can hardly ever sleep.

It lurks in the darkness of the night,

My only comfort:

To bury my head,

Pull my knees up tight.

Nevertheless, I can still smell smoke,

Your breath against my cheek.

Suddenly I'm back at the start,

like a tape set on repeat.
