A.D.D.I.C.T.I.O.N.

By Taea.

Addiction. A word which here means finding yourself drawn to something regardless of its toxic effects.

We all suffer from addiction somehow; for better, or for worse. Whether it’s things like drugs or alcohol, listening to songs that remind you of sad times, or something as little as to how you like your morning coffee. Everyone has something. You can pretend you don’t have something, or that you don’t really know what it is but deep down you know…

Deep down… We all know.

Every day we sit there and think, “What could one little text do?” or, “What can one little pill do?”, “One extra shot of coffee?” Before long, you can’t stop. You try and try but you can’t. That’s how it gets you! See, now you’re trapped – like a mouse by a lion. You’re stuck with no way to escape. Imagine it. You have to fight and fight, and struggle to get free. Every day of your life is a battle and then suddenly the cage opens and you’re, you guessed it, free. Free as a bird. You think it’s all in the past, that it won’t ever come to find you again.

Then you relapse… You start back at the beginning.

Repeat the process again.  It’s a cycle. A never-ending cycle that the brave few break. One day, you too will join the list of people who broke their addiction and freed themselves from the course. When will that day be? That’s the kicker.

Procrastination. A word which here means putting off something until the very last minute.

You wake up every day and tell yourself, “Today’s the day where I stop doing it.” Then, you do it two hours later. So, you tell yourself, “Tomorrow! That’s the day.” Tomorrow comes, and it repeats. Once again it’s a cycle. Now, the addiction is paired with that deadly drug procrastination and soon you’re doing it on your death bed. Don’t worry. Your secret’s safe with me and soon it will be with you when you take it to the grave.

As I said, everyone’s addicted to something—a song, a book, a drink – but everyone is addicted to time. One second. One minute. One year. One lifetime. Will you let procrastination rule it?

You may be reading this going, “Well, what is she addicted too?” That list is either finite or infinite, depending on the viewer. Will you ever find out what it is? Is it hurting myself with something sharp? Is it alcohol whenever I want to feel numb? Iced coffee with milk and sweetener? Or talking to people who care about me in hopes of feeling something in return? A book that pushes the boundaries of the imagination? Or is it re-reading a letter some boy wrote me when I was 11? Is it all the above? Or none of the above?

What do you think it is?

Addiction. A word which here means finding yourself drawn to something regardless of its toxic effects.
