Everyday Things

I drink my coffee

No sugar, just cream

Stare out the window

As if in a dream

I watch the snow fall

Piling up in mounds

Whitening all things

Deadening all sounds

I hear my son play

PubG games downstairs

Some poor opponent

Caught in the crosshairs

I sit with my book

Of clean empty sheets

And contemplate words

And calculate beats

My other son asks

Hey mom, can we go

To get me some smokes

Despite all the snow

Sure, later, I say

And look up again

To see that the snow

Has turned into rain

I look at my page

Record this fine day

Of everyday things

The scenes in life’s play
