Doomsday Clock Update.

Today was the day for the Doomsday Clock to be updated. Already at 2 minutes to midnight, many people were waiting for a backward movement, perhaps by 30 seconds. Personally, I’d not have been surprised it it had moved forward, another half minute less from midnight, but it has remained the same.

The threats are primarily two-fold, being nuclear issues and climate change. The exchanges between the US and North Korea played a big part in last year’s forward movement. Although the situation has quietened down, the issue has not seen any real resolution. The Iran situation and the US withdrawing from the INF Treaty (Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces) has forced up any reduction in nuclear worries.

Then there is climate change, with more and more cases of extreme weather events taking place around the world. Rather than reducing harmful emissions, they have increased in both 2017 and again in 2018.

Of course, the increasing instability around the world cannot help. It would be hard to think of anywhere that you could call ‘stable’ right now. All-in-all, I think we could have only narrowly missed the 90 seconds to midnight, and that is a scary thought indeed.
