I recently went under the knife for double by-pass and a new (to me) aortic valve. Laying in a hospital bed for 18 days afforded me plenty of time to wrestle with my thoughts and write

Shadow People
Just as there are no atheists in the foxholes
You are never alone when you’re down
Just beyond the edges of pain,
The shadow people are always around
They wait and they watch from the darkness
To see what fate holds in store
To see if the reaper is reaping
Or if death passes by your door
They feed on the fear of the fragile
Consuming the loneliness of a hospital bed
They like your lack of sleep, that you’re a life sized voodoo doll
But mostly they like that you’re not dead
They were there in the operating theater
Knee deep in the grist and the gore
Watching to see if you’d flatline
Or if death would pass by your door
The road to recovery is long and laborious
The way back to health a harrowing course
Each meticulous moment of movement
Instigates strain at its source
With each breath drawn through teeth clenched
With each suspicious squeak from the hallway floor
They wait anxiously for you to join them
Or for death to pass by your door

I like your use of the refrain in this piece. There are quite a number of formal types of poetry that use refrain in different ways and locations. It's considered a 'poetic element'.
I've heard about shadow people. I understood that to see them predicts imminent death, but I've not read about them - nor, thankfully, have I seen any (not yet). When I saw your title, I was curious about how you would use them and approach the subject. I'm so glad they didn't take you up with them. Keep that door closed. (that's why you have a peep hole)

I have a ...friend... who has issues with the shadow people. It makes her sound, well, a little bit insane. (As does discussing about almost any thought or entity that exists in the darkness when spoken of in the spectrum of visible light). She’s enlisted the assistance of a Native American shaman to operate on her behalf. Life is a challenge. Even more so when you step into the gray areas beyond mainstream science.
