The Last Call

He told her
“I love you”
She responded in kind
But it was now just a ritual
Engrained in the mind
As he ended the call
he knew it was done
Never before
Had he felt so alone

How had they
Reached this chasm
This vast emptiness
This gulf of indifference
Filled with formal friendliness
Had they forgotten to nurture
The nature of the heart
Taken love for granted
And drifted apart

As he put his phone
in his pocket
A tear formed in one eye
It just suddenly appeared
He didn’t know why
He wasn’t really sad
Just lonely and tired
At leaving lost love behind him
And the effort required
