I'm quietly sitting all alone in the hotel lobby
Of the Gran Caribe Sunbeach Hotel in Varadero, Cuba
The sunshine is BRIGHT, the birds are SINGING
It's so peaceful here, at my home away from home
I'm trying to tap into the intermittent wifi
And connect with the ones I love, at home
There are people from all over the world
Coming & going around me
Talking amongst themselves
Some in languages I cannot speak or understand
Raised voices catch my attention at the table beside me
They JOLT me back to REALITY
A man, a woman & their daughter are present
I look over just in time to witness HIM slap HER
The SOUND of his hand making CONTACT on her fair skin
I don't understand what's immediately wrong
But he's clearly annoyed by something she's not done
My eyes meet his & I can't help but blurt out
Don't let me catch you doin' that AGAIN!
He's annoyed that I've WITNESSED his despicable act
But I'm standing my ground
Her eyes meet mine & I ask her out loud
Why do you let him treat you that way?
It's UNACCEPTABLE, no matter where you're from
Or what country you're currently in
Especially in front of ME
It's a reminder of the DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
I've dealt with over the course of the past year
It's a very RAW & REAL reminder because
For so many years, I was HER
Afraid to stand up for MYSELF
But I'm no longer a PRISONER & I thank God
Every day that I was finally able to see the light
No longer will I REMAIN QUIET or AFRAID to SPEAK UP
I now choose to sleep ALONE at night
Over the course of this past week
When OUR paths have crossed either
In the dining room or by the pool
I've been making sure he knows MY EYES are WATCH'N
Today, I'm leaving to return home
I'm waiting in the lobby for my bus
And she's sitting ALONE, just across from me
She remembers who I am when OUR EYES meet
To not allow the ABUSE to continue
As I leave, I let her know that I'll NEVER FORGET
The moment I witnessed WHEN HE HIT HER
