I’ve begun to wither

shrinking slowly

underneath your

absent breath

after all, the party is over

everyone has gone

and left me to clean up

cans and torn streamers

strewn about

scattered game pieces

some, lost forever

Quiet, the music and voices

have faded into the night

morning brings such clarity to these things

beams of sunlight

peak through closed curtains

revealing a parade of muddy footprints

someone left a jacket behind, who? I’m not sure.

but they won’t be back to get it.

everyone will wish me the best and tell me how fun it has been,

but they will never look back.

How is it that I have surrounded myself with so many deserters?

Alone in a wilderness, frigid and cold

How did I misjudge your intentions?

Ah, I knew all along, I just didn’t want to face it

where do I find what is real when everything is invented?

to create self-serving nights that don’t last

phony and fabricated

nothing more than cardboard

a lie that’s gone on too long

Once I mopped up the footprints,

I could see my reflection in the floor

standing over it,

I wasn’t withered at all
