Chapter 4.

Grabbing the sharpened axe from the shed, I climbed in to my car and set off. It wasn’t the easiest place to find andit took longer than I’d imagined. Eventually I found the house, They were all around here somewhere, I just knew it.

I found Anastasia and Sophie first. So pale, so beautiful, but I just saw red, slashing out, lashing out. Neither put up much defence, or struggle as I hacked away with the axe. They had to die because of what they had done; that was the only thought that was in my mind. There wasn’t time to pause, I could not allow my anger to cool. Which way now? If only I knew. I stumbled off to the right, hoping I was not just going on a wild goose chase.

It was completely by chance I stumbled upon Alex, Eliza, Beverly and Pearl. How could they? All so close to each other and all of them taken in. I was like a whirling dervish, axe blade out and making contact again and again. They this time, were not going to silently take their punishment. I was bleeding myself, but my anger was such that they’d not be able to stand against me.

I was a mass murderer now and had nothing to lose by hunting down the others.

Next it was Lindsey, all dressed in yellow. Ian had always told me he hated yellow, but apparently that was only on me. She stood alone, almost in a stance of defeat. She knew that she deserved every blow I was about to deliver and she put up no struggle at all.

Not so far from Lindsey, I found Carola and Georgia. They were standing so close together I was sure that they were whispering , maybe even laughing at me. I threw myself at them, hacking heedlessly, ignoring the blood on my arms, my face. If I’d have taken my time, I might not have fallen against Geraldine. She got in a good bit of damage before I finally managed to subdue her with a that took her to the ground.

here were four of them. They all stood united, defiant in their redness. How beautiful they were? How could I blame Ian for being seduced by them? That’s what they seemed to be taunting me with. Who was Ella, after all? Some drab and insignificant nothing compared to their flourishing and exuberant beauty.

Lisa, Ruby, Roxanne and Victoria, they were the undisputed queens here. They dared me and I leaped, heedlessly throwing myself in to the fray.

My axe was no longer so sharp now and it was a struggle to bring the four of them down. The dulled blade had to strike multiple times before it would inflict fatal damage. We’d all been unceremoniously dumped for a woman called Trudi.

I felt the blood drip from my finger tips and trickle its way down my cheek. Fourteen dead! Kind of appropriate for Valentine’s Day. But not Ian. Not Trudi. They were not here, had got away, made their escape. My husband who I had given up everything for had left me.

I fell to my knees amongst the slaughtered rose bushes. My blood mingled with Ruby’s petals, matched Roxanne’s deep red. Maybe if I had not been so broken-hearted I could have appreciated the irony of that.

I had killed them. I had put them out of their misery. They would be free of suffering the pain brought about by his desertion, so in some ways they should be thankful for the service I had performed for them. If only there was someone that would do the same for me.
