He went pass another “marker” that was half buried in the snow.
“Green boots..that must be it..means I'm in the right direction..”
He continues to climb for awhile before realizing that his boots were the same color as the last pair of boots he saw.
Come to think of it, he might have passed a couple of other “markers” that looked similar to the last one.
He suddenly stops.
“Wait a minute...how many of those were with green boots? And why do all of them look like mine?”
He looks down for awhile before looking up again.
“How did I get here again?”

Some sort of self-inflicting fate he was having. He was baffled and influenced by his own past faiures and never got out of it. Hope he realized that now. This was a thought provoking write in such a short passage. Very done.
