When I least expected it, a lost dog wandered into my life- and wound up finding a new home. On a gray afternoon in August, he came running up to me on a street near my house- completely trusting me, with his kind face and sad brown eys .... no tags, no name and a story he couldn't tell. I was in my car at the time and had stopped to pat him on the head. He liked that, so I got out to get a better look at him, leaving the door open. The next thing I knew, he was in the car. He had known me for 10 seconds and just jumped in, no invitation, climbed into the passsenger seat, sat down and looked at me. Apparently he expected me to take him to his home, but since Ididn't know where that was , I didn't what to do. First we sat on the lawn in front of my house for a while. Surely someone would come rushing up, so gald to find him and take him home... No one came . We walked around the neighhood, we drove in the car in wider and wider circles." Anybody lose a dog? No body. Iput found ads in the newspapers... no reponse.I checked the shelters, the lost ads, and posted pictures in the neighborhood and at the dog park, nothing. Days went by  and I kept looking into those sad eyes. Can you imagine finding yoursels living in a different house, with a different person, never hearing your name spoke, and having no idea how ithappened? I wanted so much to know his story... Novemder came, and still I had questions. How did you get separated from your family? Why didn't anyone call to claim you? By now we were going for walks around the neigborhood in the afternoons. With a front-leg problem, and something wrong  with his back, he still lived for his walks, because that's when he got to meet everybody. Eventually it was time for him to have a name . I GUESS i liked how people often greet an animal they don't know by saying, Hi puppy. So his name became Hank, now this lost dog whose name nobody knew has a name that evrybody know's, Hey Hank! How ya doin Hank ? I gave up trying to find his former home and treid to find him a new one instead. It was getting harder to think of giving him away, but my house and yard didn't seem right for him. One evening we walked over to a pet adoption event a couple of blocks from my house. They put on a bright orange vest on him that said " Adopt me" in big black letters. Dozens of people came by to see all the dogs, and Hank wagged his tail and nuzzled everyone. everybody loved him, but nobody took him.But on that day Hank would find a place he could call home. He had trusted me from the moment Iopened the car door when we fisrt met. Now, standing in a criwd of people who didn't want him, this sweet animal pressed his soft muzzle into my hand and looked uop. Icouldn't take it anymore, The adoption event was over for us.  I hooked the leash to Hank's collar, and he shuffled down the sidewalk and around the corner, leading me gently. He knew the way, and the look on his face told me he was happy- happy to be going home.
