Madness – Come, Let’s Explore

You might think that you know this place, or at least have some familiarity with it. Have you read the story? You know the name, you know the places, you’re sure you’ll recognise the faces? Wrong!

This is NOT that Wonderland. I’ve told you that before. No wandering off like Alice did, not if you want to survive. Stick with me and Cheshire, here. We’ll do what we can to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. But remember, you chose to follow, you had a chance to turn back, for of danger here there’s no lack.

Do you see that tall building ahead in the distance? It looks like a tower but that would be a very wrong assumption to go and make. That is the home of the terrible twins, Ho-Hi and Ho-Hum. It’s only one storey for they are so tall, giants in this place of Wonder. If they laugh it sounds like thunder, but then that’s not something that happens too often. You are far more likely to come upon them either in a sulk or a row, for close as they are they quite simply cannot get along for long.

Go ahead, Cheshire. Scout it out; if all is clear, give us a shout.

See how Cheshire can streak ahead, dashing forward so fast he becomes invisible. That’s a real talent in a place such as this, appearing when only you do wish. Alas, it is not a talent I share, nor you of course so we have to take care.

The chances are that the brothers are not at home for they like to take a morning walk. They have such long strides they can take in quite a large scene. They always move in a clock-wise way; if we head counter-clockwise we’ll be okay.

Are they violent, you ask? Dangerous?

No, but they so rarely get visitors that if they decide that you are their own guests, well....you’ll find yourself stuck and won’t visit the rest. They like to tell stories and sing you some songs. Games too, but that is a risky thing to do for they both really are such terribly bad losers.

Hear that purr? That’s Cheshire saying the coast is clear. We’d better take to our heels and run!

Come on, come on! Can’t you keep up? It’s all downhill. In fact, we could go the fun way. That’s it copy me; lie down on your side, give yourself a push and roll all the way to the bottom. Much faster than running and you don’t have to worry about tripping.

Watch the flowers! Keep away! Oh dear, for one it’s too late to say. Don’t look back, for there’s no time to linger. We’re on a R..O..L..L!

Thanks, Cheshire. We’ve just lost one so far which is pretty good going. No, not to the twins, you did a fine job, but the Jupiter plants. Someone did not understand how to roll in a straight line and veered right in to their feeding course.

No time to waste, though, we’ll go to the sea. Or at least to the place that it used to be. Don’t look glum. It’s not so very far from here. Stay close, don’t linger. There! Look ahead. That vast expanse of nothingness, a total WASTE-LAND. Yep, it is so true, there is nothing but sand.

Don’t worry. You won’t sink for it is quite dry apart from the pools. Keep an eye open for them because they pop up quite suddenly and can be very, very deep. Something happened to the water and it will not let you float....fall in and you will certainly get that tumbling feeling that some of you might be feeling cheated of, right now. The difference is that, unlike Alice, you’ll find that you simply cannot breathe. Until you do, you have to really, and then I guess you simply drown.

That’s if the lobsters don’t get you first. No, they are not giants, pretty normal in size actually. It’s the pincers, you see. They’ve changed in to scissors and will snip you and me.

So remember, pools and lobsters, lobsters and pools, for those who forget will find that they’re fools.

It stretches for miles, this expanse of just sand. If we keep walking, eventually we’ll catch a glimpse of the sea on the far horizon.

Cheshire, what’s wrong? Why do you yowl? Gulls you say! Right, no time to explain, get ready to duck and cover your head with your arms or your hands....No, keep your head down! I warned you, didn’t I. Now, you look a bit like Humpty with that egg shell perched on the top of your head!

Why they do it, no one quite knows. It’s a bit like the lemmings, I do suppose. In a fit of depression for the loss of the sea they don’t try to kill themselves but the future generations. It can never work for they each lay far more eggs than just one.

Ssssh! Can you hear that, the marching of feet? We need now to beat one real hasty retreat! Too late! I’m sorry, I’ve led you astray, to escape from these masked men there is simply no way. Try not to breathe and maybe the wind will be on our side, will blow the gas away from us. Masks, you ask? Well, I don’t have one either, but Cheshire is immune.

Run, Cheshire, disappear! Don’t let them catch you but hang on to that fear.

We’re too far out to have much chance. They are organized, rehearsed for such an event as this. The Masked Brigade, they have no care, no compassion; they really are monsters in their own fashion.

Ringing us now, making a circle. This is a new development. But that means the wind can’t keep us free for wherever it’s coming from, the gas will be. A pool! Look, the lobsters have come. Snippity Snip and look down goes one.....no, don’t try and grab the mask. They are not really on our side, the lobsters are just hungry and would just as soon munch us as them.

There are too few lobsters, too many men. Better to breathe in than to try to resist them.
