Kay is unprepared for what’s to come. Her job is just a job though it’s tied to highly technical backends as she sets up chatbots for companies wanting to provide better/faster customer service by voice and chat.

She lives a normal life for a 20something and makes enough income to support herself, buy gadgets to make her life easier, and socialize. She has an expanding group of friends. Since she lives in a small town in mid-America her friends are not assumed to be high-tech, entrepreneurs, or even highly tech savvy. They all use lots of tech but don’t seem to be enamored with it any differently than how people have their own hobbies. She is financially ok and not driven by income concerns but still would like to make more. It is not obvious that she could be motivated by big money but we don’t know that for sure.

She works from home full time for a company located somewhere else and her second bedroom is her office.

She and her friends sometimes talk about work but mostly talk about local issues. They are not particularly political. When they do talk about work it’s about situations and not about the specifics of their work. So while they may know what companies each other work for, they don’t share specifics. This is eventually important because we don’t know what details are just not important and what details some of her friends are hiding. They may have hidden agendas or doing work that they can’t talk about.
