Never again...

The price of love is loss.
When you open your heart to love, you also make yourself vulnerable to get hurt.
But loving and facing loss beats never loving at all - every single time.

For my fellow pet owners out there - who knows what it means to lose a loved one.

Never again...

Never again…
These two words flash through my mind whenever I am faced with the death of a beloved pet. I am consumed by them and the finality of reality when you realise, that yes, NEVER again, will you see them.
Never again will you hold them.
Never again will they do those thousands of little things that brighten up your day and make life joyful.
Never again – so concluding, so ultimate.
And then, with those two thoughts circling through your mind, you think that never again will the world be right. Which is true to an extent. The world will never again be the same without them. You will never again be the same person.
You are convinced your heart will never again stop aching.
You promise yourself time and again – that never again will you allow yourself to love someone that dearly, that the cost and loss isn’t worth the pain.
But,
life does go on. And time really does mend all wounds.
When enough time has elapsed to ease the pain and soothe the ache in your heart,
you’ll realise – you’d do it all again, regardless.
Because never again will you be loved as much by someone.
Never again will someone make you laugh as much daily.
Never again will you have a bond that defies all – species, time, even death.
Because, yes, never again will you see or hold the one you loved dearly.
But NEVER EVER will you forget.
Because love is forever, even after memories fade. I read a quote once that captured this fact beautifully: you will forget what someone said or did. But you will never forget how someone made you feel.
And that’s true. Over the years, you will forget the thousand little things that someone did. Your memories of incidents will fade, and some are even lost forever.
But, when you think back, and recall your first rabbit, that silly rat or fiercely loyal dog, you will smile, and your heart will swell with nothing but joy and love.
Love outlives hurt.
Because at the end of the day, that’s what remains – the feeling and memory of having loved and been loved in return. And THAT,
will NEVER EVER fade…
