Throughout my life in Capsule, I've grown up watching two very different types of people. The ones who believe a truth even if they have never seen it. Never found any proof of its existence, but in their mind, it just exists somewhere. On the other end are those who see the truth and refuse to believe it.
My brother is one of the believers. A dreamer, really. He believes that there's a better life out there on the surface. One with fresh air, trees, even wild animals. I guess I'm just more of a realist. A pessimist, as he says. I think it's all rotten and contaminated. Turned to ash and decay by nothing more than human greed and hate. At least, that's what they taught us in school.
They don't coddle their students in the classrooms of Capsule. They love teaching us about the wars that led up to the flat out destruction of what was a fairly advanced society. It was us, the human race, that nearly caused its own extinction along with the rest of the planet. As far as we know, the 147 people living in this underground bunker might just be all that's left breathing on this planet.
"Bailey!"
I jumped in my desk, causing my knee to hit the metal bar that connected it with the chair. I scowled to my left. My best friend, Noah sat silently snickering at me. His silky light brown hair falling innocently over his eyes, making it hard for me to be mad at him. He always had an adorable charm to his features. Ignoring the pain in my knee, I glared at him.
"What?!" I whispered.
"You fell asleep again and Carter is giving you the stink eye." He whispered back.
The room was quiet enough to make me suddenly self-conscious as I looked around and noticed a few other pairs of eyes on me. I dared a look up at Mr. Carter. His thinning, brown hair combed neatly back. His glasses sitting low on his thin, bird-like nose. His beady eyes staring right at me and yeah, they looked a little less than amused.
"I think he's trying to set you on fire with his mind." Noah chuckled at his own joke but quickly covered it with a cough when Mr. Carter turned his hateful eyes on him.
This year I'm in the graduating class with only eight other students in it, including Noah. With only three weeks left until our final one month break, most of the teachers didn't care what their students did during class but Carter was a real hard ass. He spends the last month every year trying to prepare his graduates for the jobs they will take once school is over for them. Tomorrow we're getting our job assignments. After that we'll spend the remainder of our education doing some kind of internship training program in the job area we are assigned. As much as I hate school, I hate the idea of a job even more.
I rubbed my eyes with the palms of my hands as I tried to release the anxiety-fueled tension slowly from my body. The stress and the pressure of adulthood have been keeping me awake late at night as all of my fears and insecurities flood my mind. What if I'm not good at anything? The only thing I ever really had a passion for in school was learning about what the world used to be like before the war. What the ocean was like. All the different plants and animals that once flourished. What a car was and how it worked. All of these things are useless when you live under the dirt.
"Are you even listening, Miss Cooper?" The angry tone in Mr. Carter's voice snapped me out of my daydream. He was staring at me with such an intensity that it almost stung. I could feel my face growing red with embarrassment.
"Are any of us?" Someone from the back corner of the room said.
